Make room for a clearer rental application.

Understand the difference between your credit view and a landlord’s tenant screening report.

Know which report matters

A landlord may use a tenant screening report. It can differ from the credit overview you see in a consumer tool. Reviewing a credit score alone does not guarantee rental approval.

If a report affected the decision

If a landlord denies your application because of a tenant screening report, federal rules require notice identifying the reporting company and explaining your rights. You may request a free copy within 60 days of the adverse action.

Review the details

Read the actual screening report for information you believe is inaccurate. Keep the notice and supporting records together. Follow the reporting company’s dispute instructions, and use the CFPB resource below for the full explanation.
